Okay, so I’ve been watching Breaking Bad on Netflix and every time Skylar or another character brings up money and how more income would be better while Walt is out for chemo or surgery, or how they can’t possibly afford treatment because it’s not in their HMO kind of makes me cringe. Maybe the teachers’ union isn’t so great in New Mexico but seriously, Walt has what, a PhD? Which means he’s maxed out on the salary schedule so that’s what between $50 and $60 thousand a year. Sure, that’s a fraction of what he could make doing research for Dow or something, but it’s nothing to snivel about either. Their union is extremely powerful and as a result teachers have some of the best medical benefits of any job. And most importantly, when you take a leave of absence you STILL get paid. Even in New Mexico. It’s called a salary, not a wage. Sure, teachers are underpaid, under appreciated and have a fuck load of work to prepare for class, plus all the hours spent correcting tests, quizzes, papers and assignments - and that’s not really factored into the salary. But Walt would still get paid while out for surgery. Skylar wouldn’t HAVE to go back to work after just having given birth. I mean, I know it’s fiction and there have to be complications, lies, etc. especially since they seem to be setting up some affair/romance between Skylar and her boss, but seriously, wouldn’t Walt know a bulshitter? When writers get most of the details right, these kinds of errors due to a lack of knowledge stick out like a sore thumb. </rant>
